Meet Dr. Hill, The Speech Doc
My Roots as a Speech Therapist
I began my career as a high school teacher, but all that changed in the mid-1970s. My twin daughters were born with a rare vision syndrome and, when it was time for them to enter school, I learned about PL94-142, the brand new special education law. As I learned about special education, I discovered speech therapy. With the mentoring of a special education director, I made the decision to change my career path and have never looked back professionally.
My Journey as a Speech Therapist
My educational journey began at Texas Tech many years ago and ended at Texas Woman’s University in 2000, when I earned a Ph.D. The road to my doctorate was long and sometimes difficult, but worth every effort and sacrifice along the way. Through the years, I received formal education and training in both general and special education and speech-language pathology. All those years of schooling helped shape me as an educator and a speech therapist. But my journey hasn’t ended. I am a life-long learner and continuing education remains an important part of who I am as a therapist.
Professionally, I have enjoyed wonderful opportunities in both public school and private practice speech-language therapy. After 30 years of doing both educational and clinical speech therapy, I now work only in private practice. Even though I no longer work in the schools, my experience in both settings is a valuable asset that allows me to understand and appreciate you and your child from both perspectives.
Through the years I've had many opportunities to meet and work with amazing children and their families. One of those amazing children is the reason I’m known as “Dr. Bob” to my kids, their parents, and even other professionals. It’s a long story, but if you ask me, I’ll be happy to share!
I am thankful every day for the happenstance that brought me into speech therapy all those years ago and I’m thankful every day that my journey continues.
My Life Beyond Speech Therapy
My family and a few dear friends are my “social circle" and I take great pleasure in just being with them. After family and friends, my husband and I are homebodies, although we do like to enjoy an awesome restaurant and live stage performance every now and then.
In addition to my daughters, I have 4 very special and beautiful (well, one is a tomboy and would probably prefer “handsome") granddaughters who provide plenty of opportunity to attend live performances - at the theater, choir concerts, piano recitals, and black-belt karate exhibitions! They keep me running and I love it!
